How to help search engines and AI understand your business

If search engines and AI (artificial intelligence) platforms don’t fully understand your business, they can’t decide when to show, mention or recommend it.

This affects more than just the traditional Google search. People are increasingly discovering businesses through Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI-powered tools, all of which rely on available information to understand what a company does and whether it is relevant to a particular question.

The clearer your business context is, the easier it becomes for these systems to connect the dots.

Business context simply means the information that explains who you are, what you offer, who you help, where you operate and what makes your services relevant.

For example, imagine you run a company that installs and maintains commercial air conditioning systems. If your website only talks broadly about “air conditioning services”, a search engine or AI platform may struggle to work out whether you serve homeowners, offices, factories or all three.

If your website clearly explains that you specialise in commercial air conditioning for offices and industrial premises across a particular region, there is much less room for misunderstanding.

This context can come from your service pages, location pages, About page, FAQs (frequently asked questions), case studies, business listings and other information published about your company online.

Consistency is important too. If one part of your online presence describes you as a specialist in one area, while another suggests something very different, it becomes harder for search engines and AI systems to form a clear picture of your business.

This isn’t about cramming keywords into every page though – it’s about making your expertise, services, audience and geographic coverage easy to understand. The stronger and more consistent those signals are, the better chance search engines and AI platforms have of associating your business with the right topics and queries. While this doesn’t guarantee rankings, AI mentions or recommendations of course, it can reduce ambiguity and improve your chances of being understood for the right reasons.
