Search Generative Experience (SGE) is an advanced feature that was introduced to Google Search in May 2023.
SGE uses generative artificial intelligence (AI) to provide users with a summary of search results, called snapshots.
These snapshots appear at the top of the Google’s search engine results page (SERP) and are designed to give quick and concise information on a search topic, without having to click on a result link.
At the moment, SGE is in its experimental phase, and is accessible through Search Labs, a program designed to allow people to experiment with Google’s new products.
How does Search Generative Experience work?
SGE uses AI technology to synthesise information from multiple sources across the web to provide an answer to a search query.
For example, when a user conducts a search for “how long does a carpet last in a rental property?”, instead of showing a list of results in position 1 – 10, SGE will combine the information from these results to provide one detailed answer.
The sources used to create the AI-generated answer are listed on the right-hand side of the snapshot, where users can click through to find more information.
SGE is designed to be interactive and can include images, videos and text. This means that rich media to support your written content is now more important than ever.
How is Search Generative Experience different to traditional Google Search Results?
SGE is designed to give you all the answers you need in one single search.
For example, instead of conducting multiple searches, such as “dress code for an outdoor wedding”, “Miami weather in May”, “what colours are trending right now” and “online dresses with two day delivery”, you can search “dress for an outdoor wedding in Miami in May in a trending colour with two day delivery”.
SGE uses AI-technology to collect information from various sources across the web to generate an answer to the search query, regardless of how specific it is.
SGE also has the functionality to ask to follow up questions that are related to your original search, without having to start over again. You’ll then get more information on the topic of your search.
