Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tag management tool. It allows you to implement marketing measurement codes, otherwise known as tags, onto your website.
Google Tag Manager works as the middleman between two data sources. GTM collects information from one source, such as your website, and shares it with another data source, such as Google Analytics.
Why use Google Tag Manager?
GTM is popular with online marketers, as it can be used to install and manage a variety of tags on a site without having a web developer on hand to help modify the websites code.
Before Google introduced its tag management system, tracking codes needed to be hard coded onto a website, which could cause issues if you weren’t as clued up as our team of web developers!
GTM can be used to track important events on your website, such as the number of times a visitor has clicked the contact us button, or how many users visited your social media account through the link on your site.
After being gathered via GTM, this information is then accessible in Google Analytics for analysis, comparison and reporting.
How to add a user to your Tag Manager account
1. Log in to your Tag Manager account and select Admin in the top left hand corner of the screen.
2. In the Admin screen, select User Management in the Account column (the column on the left-hand side.)
3. Click the blue ‘+’ button in the top right-hand corner of the Account permissions screen and select add users.
4. Enter the email address of the user you wish to add to your Tag Manager account in the email field. If you’re working with Engage Web, this is the email address provided in our onboarding email.
5. The account permissions will be selected as User by default. Change this to Administrator.
Optional: If you wish to make any changes to the container permissions, such as read only, you can do so in this screen.
6. Click the blue Invitation button in the top right-hand corner of the screen. The recipient will receive an email granting access to your Tag Manager account.
What is the difference between Tag Manager account permission levels?
When providing a user with access to your Google Tag Manager account, you are invited to choose between Administrator and User ownership permissions.
Administrator
An administrator can create new containers within your Google Tag Manager account, while also having the ability to modify user permissions for the account and the containers within it.
User
Users of the Tag Manager account granted User ownership permissions can view the account but are unable to make any changes.
