What do AI overviews in search engines mean for my website?

You’ve probably noticed it by now. You Google something and before you’re presented with any links to websites, you see a concise summary of what you’ve searched for.

This may include bullet points, charts, text or images. That’s Google’s new AI Overview giving you the answer to what you’ve searched for, before you’ve even clicked anything.

Great for users. Potentially catastrophic for your web traffic. However, this will all depend on how quickly and effectively you react to these changes.

AI Overviews are part of Google’s push to make search more helpful. But for content creators and business owners, it’s a bit like hosting a dinner party and having your neighbour pop in and give everyone the menu in advance. Why stick around when you’ve already got what you came for?

But don’t panic. This doesn’t mean SEO is dead, it’s simply evolving. Enter: Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO. Instead of just trying to rank high, you’re now trying to get cited by the AI overview itself.

How? Start by making your content super clear and easy to summarise. Think FAQs, comparison tables, concise headings, and actually answering the question someone’s searching for. The better your structure, the more likely the AI is to borrow from you.

This isn’t about trying to outsmart Google or cheat the algorithm. It’s about getting to grips with how search actually works now.
