We’ve been having more frequent conversations lately with business owners who feel like they’re “doing SEO” (search engine optimisation) but not really seeing much from it.
They’ve got blogs going out. Pages are optimised, and maybe there’s even some backlinks coming in. On paper, it all looks right.
But traffic isn’t moving. Enquiries aren’t improving. When you dig into it, the issue usually isn’t effort, it’s direction.
Search has changed. It’s no longer just about matching keywords to pages. The way search engines work now, especially with AI (artificial intelligence) in the mix, is much more about understanding what your business actually is and where it fits.
This might sound obvious, but most websites don’t make that clear at all. You’ll see one blog about one topic, another chasing a completely different keyword and service pages that don’t really tie it all together. It ends up feeling a bit scattered. Humans can piece it together, but AI struggles with the lack of focus.
If AI, or search engines, can’t confidently figure out what you’re known for, they’re far less likely to put you in front of the right people.
This is where the idea of “entity authority” starts to matter. Don’t worry though, the name makes it sound more complicated than it is.
It really just comes down to this: are you consistently showing up as a credible voice in a specific area? Not 10 areas. Not “a bit of everything.” One or two things you actually want to be known for.
The businesses that are starting to do well in this new version of search aren’t necessarily producing more content. They’re just being more deliberate with it. Everything they publish connects. Their services, their blogs, even the links they earn all point in the same direction. It builds a clearer picture.
If there’s one takeaway, it’s probably this: stop chasing every keyword that looks relevant and start thinking about what you want your business to be associated with.
Because that’s what search engines are doing now – making associations. If you’re not shaping those yourself, they’ll either guess… or ignore you altogether.
