Texas man sues car dealership after truck finds social media fame

A Texan plumber is taking a car dealership to court after a truck he used to own was featured in a viral video.

Texas City resident Mark Oberholtzer, owner of Mark-1 Plumbing, claims that his life was ruined after the Ford F-250 truck he used to own, which was emblazoned with his contact details, found its way into social media newsfeeds courtesy of a propaganda video produced by extremists Ansar al-Deen Front, which is at war with the Syrian government.

Oberholtzer claimed that he expected car dealership Auto Nation to remove the decals on the truck after he had traded it in. However, once footage of the truck surfaced online and confirmed the contrary, he says that he received more than a thousand phone calls that were:

“…in large part harassing and contained countless threats of violence, property harm, injury and even death.”

Oberholtzer says that he was forced to close down his business for a week, and even took to carrying a handgun for personal protection.

After taking social media by storm, the photos of the truck were picked up by the media, and were even featured in a segment on The Colbert Report. Host Stephen Colbert joked:

“[Syria] is going down the toilet, but for the first time, they know who to call to unclog it.”

It’s unknown how the truck found its way to Syria, but records show that it was imported to Turkey in December of 2013.

A spokesman for Auto Nation said that it was nothing but “the pass-through for this vehicle”, and denied any wrongdoing.
