Photo-messaging platform Snapchat has reportedly begun to roll out a second redesign of the app.
Towards the end of last year and the beginning of this year, the company began to roll out its first major redesign. However, this did not go to plan as many of the app’s users were very vocal about their dislike for the changes.
Snapchat users disliked the new design so much that 1.2 million people signed a petition to get the company to revert to the original design. Furthermore, reality TV star Kylie Jenner tweeted her disapproval of the app after the redesign, which saw the company’s value drop by £929m in a single day.
As a result of the backlash, the company has now acknowledged that the redesign has left many of its users feeling uncomfortable while using it, and is now taking into account the requests for the platform to be redesigned again.
The new layout of the app will see some features reinstated, such as putting both snaps and chats back into chronological order. It will also move one of its most popular features, Snapchat Stories, back to the right hand side of the app, back alongside other snaps and chats. This means that all content coming from friends and contacts are located in the same area of the app.
When Snapchat is opened, users are taken straight to the camera so they can take pictures easily and quickly. From here, they can swipe left towards the right side of the app where the can access content from friends. As with the first redesign, content from public figures and media outlets will remain separated from other content. Furthermore, the new design will see a new Subscriptions feed added so that users can search for stories and content from their favourite outlets more easily than before.
In a statement from company CEO Evan Spiegel, it was confirmed that the company wanted to maintain a number of structural changes originally introduced in the first redesign, such as separating the different types of snaps, but acknowledged that users were feeling confused and that it was working on sorting out solutions to these issues, and felt that the way to do this was to sort communication by recency and relationship.
The second redesign is currently being introduced worldwide to users of the iOS version of the app. It is not yet known when it will be available to those using the Android version.
