Google is expected to build on the capabilities of its wearable computer, Google Glass, by adding music features.
The option to ‘listen to’ will be displayed among a set of voice commands when Glass loads up, allowing users to find new tracks, browse existing albums and stream content using Google Play.
Additionally, by linking to their accounts on Play, users will be presented with recommendations for playlists and songs based on their listening history.
Speaking to the Times, the marketing director for Glass explained:
“With these new features, we’re now building a great music experience on Glass, whether you’re a classical music professor, an acclaimed sound engineer and hip-hop producer, or someone who wants to listen to their favourite tunes anytime, anywhere.”
Also functioning as a smartphone, the current testing version of Glass already comes with the ability to record videos, take snapshots, get directions and browse the internet.
Some analysts believe that the newly added features will make Google’s Music All Access a more prominent streaming service; so far, it has found it hard to gain a foothold against Spotify.
In a review of the first generation Glass device, the head of technology for the Telegraph said the device’s main disadvantage is that it is ‘slightly weird’ looking.
Savvy marketers and SEO specialists will likely watch the Glass device’s development with interest in the future, as social features and more comprehensive browsing options are implemented. Current applications allow users to upload content to their newsfeeds on social sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Existing owners will be given the chance to trade their device for the next version, which is expected to launch later this year or early 2014.
The current Explorer Edition of Google Glass, which has only been made available to selected developers and consumers, is priced at £940.
