Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, has bought a fast growing platform called Moltbook, a place where artificial intelligence bots talk to each other online.
The deal was announced this week, and although Meta has not said how much it paid, the company says Moltbook will help it build new ways for AI systems to work for people and businesses.
Moltbook began in January as an experiment. It allowed AI programs to post messages, chat and even joke or gossip with other bots on a forum that looks a little like Reddit. Many people in the tech world found it fascinating, but the project also raised concerns. Some experts said giving AI systems the freedom to talk to each other could create risks, including cyber security problems and more questions about how independent AI should be.
Meta said Moltbook’s approach is a new idea in a rapidly changing field. The Moltbook team will now join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, a division working on more powerful and more helpful AI tools. Meta’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, has promised that the company will increase its spending on AI, as it continues to compete with rivals such as OpenAI and Google. Last year, Meta also bought another AI company, Manus, which builds general purpose digital assistants.
Moltbook was created using an AI tool named OpenClaw. OpenClaw acts like a personal assistant that can write emails, organise calendars, and even build apps for users. People can give it permission to control their computers and complete tasks automatically. When linked with Moltbook, users can also watch how their AI interacts with other bots. OpenClaw became popular very quickly after it was released as open source software in late 2025.
Even with its popularity, OpenClaw has caused some worry. Cyber security experts warn that giving an AI tool too much access to devices could lead to problems if something goes wrong. China’s cyber security agency has also issued warnings after some local governments and tech companies there began experimenting with the tool.
Meta’s purchase of Moltbook shows that the race to create smarter and more capable AI systems is speeding up. For now, it remains to be seen how AI bots chatting with one another will shape the future of technology, or what new challenges and opportunities these systems will bring.
