Lennon death threat Facebook group attracts controversy

A SDLP councillor is calling upon Facebook to remove a page calling for the gunning down of the manager of Celtic FC.

Neil Lennon has attracted the ire of many Celtic fans, even though the team are sitting at the top of the Scottish Premier League five points ahead of their Old Firm rivals Rangers.

The Facebook page, which is called the ‘Shoot Neil Lennon Fan Club’ has so far attracted 30 members and more than 400 ‘likes’, and features pictures of the former Northern Ireland international Photoshopped to feature gory bullet holes.

What may be seen by some as a harmless venting of frustration by fans took a sinister turn as Lennon, along with Celtic players Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn, was sent a package containing bullets last week.

Niall Kelly, a Belfast councillor for the SDLP, condemned the Facebook page as “sick”, commenting:

“I have already contacted Facebook and demanded that the page be immediately removed.”

Facebook has attracted recent controversy over privacy, and the fact that politicians are involving themselves in this matter demonstrates how powerful social media reputation management has become. However, many within the search engine optimisation industry would agree that businesses finding themselves under the cosh on Facebook would not expect ordinance through the post.

Another doctored photo on the Facebook fan page shows Lennon’s features superimposed onto a bullet with the legend ‘Special Delivery’ displayed above it. It is not the first time that Lennon has been threatened – he missed a NI match in 2002 due to death threats.
