Key points to remember when creating a mobile-friendly website

Studies suggest that an estimated 63% of global internet traffic comes from mobile devices.

This figure has skyrocketed in recent years and could increase even further. Put simply, the days of mobile-optimised websites being an option are long gone; now more than ever, they are a necessity.

So here are some factors to consider when creating or maintaining the mobile version of your website.

User navigation

This is important as it will provide your users with the smoothest process possible when browsing your site. This should be tweaked and simplified where it can and only include the essentials. It will be the desktop versions of your menus that will contain more elements however the mobile versions should be much more minimalistic.

Ensure content is concise

Similar to the previous point, your content itself should be simplified and condensed to the key points. Your visitors will not want to be scrolling through endless reams of text that must be taken into account. You should go into more detail on a desktop version, as the bigger screen makes it easier to consume larger amounts of text.

Popups

Popups are a key element of lots of sites and allow you to grab the visitor’s attention and take them away from the main content to get some sort of message across. Popups will usually promote some sort of offer so will be relevant to all users, however, they can be harder to use on a mobile.

You must make sure your popup not only looks good, but also works effectively. Therefore, it must be easy to follow and close down, should your visitors wish to do so. You must also ensure that popups are limited and are not constantly interrupting the user’s journey on your site.

Minimise calls to action

Calls to actions (CTAs) are essentially words of encouragement that attempt to persuade your visitors to do certain things within your site, such as a conversion. A conversion can be anything from a purchase to an enquiry, but they ensure that you are getting something of value from your site.

Although CTAs tend to be concise, they must be reduced further on mobile devices, otherwise they’ll look over the top. So, you might see a button on a desktop version of a site that says “Click here to begin your free trial” however, on a mobile, this might be too much. Ideally, they shouldn’t go onto more than one line so a good alternative for this would be “Begin your free trial” or even just “Free Trial.”
