How to write the perfect headline

When you spend timing writing blog articles for your website, you want your audience to benefit from what you have to say.

Before that, however, you need them to actually read it.

You may be thinking, “Well, how am I going to get them to do that?”.

Simply put, you need to give them a good reason to, and there’s no better place to do this than in your headline.

Unfortunately, the average person’s attention span is fairly short, especially when browsing the internet and social media, so your headline might be the only chance you get to lure them in.

With this in mind, here are some easy-to-follow tips if you want to increase the number of people reading your articles.

Make it interesting

If your articles are useful and interesting, your headlines should be too.

To do this, avoid any bland turns of phrase and generalisations, and frame your article in a way that persuades a reader to click on it, amidst a barrage of memes and cat videos.

Make it short and sweet

Your titles should be concise if you want them to be effective. You may or may not have heard of the abbreviation TL;DR which, slightly ironically, is short for “too long; didn’t read”.

Unfortunately, people aren’t going to be enticed by your article if your headline doesn’t get straight to the point. Give an indication of what your article is about – but don’t make your headline any longer than it needs to be.

Make the article worth reading

Yes, your headline should be interesting, meaning it should catch your audiences’ eyes.

However, be careful not to give too much away in your headline, or else nobody will bother to read the article itself.

To do this, especially in news articles, it’s important to leave the reader with an element of mystery, forcing them to click on the article itself to resolve the unanswered questions the headline has left them with.
