If you’re looking at running ads on Facebook or Instagram, the first step is to get a Meta Pixel (formerly Facebook Pixel) installed on your website.
You can read all about what a Pixel is, and why you should install one, here.
The Meta Business Suite (formerly Facebook Business Suite) can be a bit of a minefield, and so you may be wondering how on earth you actually create a Meta Pixel.
In this guide, we’ll be explaining how to generate the Pixel code. This code can then either be manually added to your website yourself, or sent across to your web developer to add it for you.
1. The first step is to go to the Meta Business Suite. You’ll want to be in the Business Settings area, so the easiest way to do this is to make sure you’re logged into Facebook, and then navigate to this link: https://business.facebook.com/settings/
Note: When you go to this link, you may be asked to select a Business Manager if you have access to multiple. You’ll want to select the Business Manager relating to the business you’re setting up the Pixel for.
2. When you’re in Business Settings, you’ll see a menu down the left-hand side. Navigate to the Data Sources heading, and under this, select ‘Datasets’.
3. On this screen, you’ll see a list of existing Datasets/Pixels, if you have any. There’ll be a blue ‘Add’ button on the screen – select this.
4. Give your Dataset (AKA, Pixel) a name. Opting for something like ‘[Business Name] Pixel’ would work well. Then, click ‘Create’.
5. You’ll then get a message asking you to choose how to connect the Pixel to your website. To generate the Pixel code, select the ‘Meta pixel only’ option.
6. You’ll then have two options: ‘Manually add pixel code to website’ and ‘Use partner integration’. To get a copy of the code, select the first option, ‘Install Code Manually’.
7. You’ll now have the option to ‘Copy base code’. Simply press the button and that’s it – you’ve got a copy of your Pixel code to install yourself or send to your web developer.
8. Once you’ve copied the code, simply click through the rest of the steps, until you get the option to press ‘Done’ (you don’t need to take any action or select any settings). Once ‘Done’ has been selected, the Pixel has officially been created, so all that’s left to do is add the code to your website so you can start tracking your website visitors!
Note: There are options where the Pixel code can be added automatically via a partner integration, as indicated in step 6. For the purposes of this guide, we’ve focused solely on generating the Pixel code manually.
