How Google borrows from other platforms to keep Gen Z scrolling

In a world where social media channels such as TikTok dominate, Google has had to make some changes to the way some of its features, like Maps, bring up results in the search engine.

Studies have found that today’s generation, particularly younger audiences, are turning to platforms like TikTok or Instagram to search for answers they once would have put into Google. When it comes to looking for places to eat, for example, or searching for services in the area, users are now becoming increasingly likely to divert to social media over the traditional search engine.

To combat this, Google has made amendments to the way its search results on web and maps will appear. The Explore tab now brings up tiles of photos and videos in a continuous stream more resemblant of a social media feed than a search engine result, which brings a more interactive feel to what used to be a more text-heavy interface.

In order to remain visible in results brought up by a search engine, you should ensure that your Google Business listing is kept up to date, with contact details and an address so potential customers can easily reach out. Having a stock of high-quality images (ones you own the copyright for) will also ensure your business appears attractive to your target market, given that many customers now make snap decisions based on the media at their disposal.
