A primary school which received a positive Ofsted rating has failed to live up to expectations with its website.
Nutgrove Primary School in St. Helens allowed its website to go live before teachers had a chance to proof-read the content, meaning the site had around 30 errors which could be seen by parents and pupils.
The spelling mistakes included ‘response’, ‘activily’ and ‘unavaiodable’– errors which could have been spotted by many of the school’s young pupils. Eventually, the website was taken down when a parent made the school aware of the mistakes.
Embarrassingly for the school, its website also contained praise the school had received from Ofsted. It appears that the school’s rating was earned through its teaching of reading and mathematics, with writing classes being criticised as unchallenging for pupils.
Any business owner whose website is in the public eye will know that errors like this can cause red faces and a damaged reputation. Many company owners and public bodies use news suppliers and other professional writers to create their web content as errors with spelling and grammar are frequently named as factors which turn readers away from websites.
For a school trying to communicate the excellence of its teaching to potential pupils and their families, these errors are very unfortunate. The consequences for commercial businesses can be equally undesirable, decreasing the likelihood of people staying on the website and resulting in the kind of publicity that’s usually best avoided.
