Harry Potter and the Deathly Boredom

One complaint I have heard about the recently released Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is that it doesn’t make a lot of sense if you’re not already immersed in the Potterverse. I believe it. Having read the books myself, like most of the population of the planet, I was able to follow the film quite well, but there were significant jumps in the story.

It got me to thinking about how deathly boring being outside the loop can be. If you’ve ever come into contact with a group of fans, you’ll know the feeling. A group of people chattering on about subjects you’re only dimly aware of is bad enough, but the fact that they frequently use terms you’ve got no idea about makes the experience unbearable – makes you feel like a right muggle. Unfortunately, this is something that can happen with SEO content.

Businesses often get wrapped up in their own little worlds. Even when they do move out of their particular spheres of reference to a more general sphere, such as that of their industry, still uses certain phrases and ideas. Outsiders have difficulty getting in, but insiders often have difficulty getting out.

It’s important to be aware of this when writing SEO content. One of your SEO jobs is to please your target users. If this is the general public, you need to remember that business language is not going to go down well.

Stay away from technical talk in your content for search engine optimisation. It’ll bore people stiff quicker than you can say Petrificus Totalis.
