Much of our personal information may be out there on the internet somewhere, whether that be your phone number, email address or even home address. The thought of this can be quite daunting – so Google has recently released a new method in which users can easily request for their personal information to be hidden from searches.
How do I do this?
All you need to do is search Google for some personal information of yours. Let’s use your phone number as an example.
If you type your number into Google, click search and find a result containing the information you are looking for. If you then click the three dots, you will see a menu with several options on, one of which being “Remove Result”. This will allow you to select why you want it to be removed.
The option at the top states “It shows my personal information and I don’t want it here”, which will then send that page to Google to undergo a review process. If Google reviews the page and concludes that it violates their policies, the page will be removed from search results – sometimes within minutes. This won’t impact the entire site, just that specific page.
Although this is a useful function, it isn’t a brand new one, as Google introduced a “Results About You” tool that allowed you to track your personal information online and decide what can and cannot be shown on search results. However, this wasn’t easy to find in comparison to the updated version, which can simply be found by clicking on the three dots next to the search result.
