Google Workspace to be updated with generative AI features

Google’s Workspace software, including Google Sheets, Google Docs and Gmail, are set to undergo a major revamp in the coming weeks, with a particular focus on the addition of generative artificial intelligence features.

A promotional video released by Google displayed some of the features the newly revamped Sheets, Docs and Gmail will boast. These include the ability to ask AI to summarise an email conversation involving a number of different members and messages, then to write a campaign brief on Google Docs using the emails that have already been summarised, before creating a presentation based on the campaign brief.

Other exciting features include the ability to personalise messages to particular clients using Google Sheets, drafting team messages on Gmail using refined instructions such as ‘Formalise’, ‘Elaborate’ and ‘Shorten’.

The renovated Google Workspace, beginning with new writing features in Gmail and Google Docs, is set to be released to select Google enterprise customers in the next couple of weeks. It’s currently unknown when the full set of features will be released to the wider public.

Google’s latest efforts in this apparent ‘AI race’ with competitors like Microsoft comes after the difficulties the company experienced upon the announcement and release of Bard, its artificial intelligence chatbot that was set to rival OpenAI and Microsoft’s ChatGPT. After a serious error in Google’s announcement video for Bard reportedly cost Alphabet Inc. (Google’s parent company) over $100bn in market value, it was clear that a fresh approach was needed for Google to make waves in the artificial intelligence battle.

For now, it seems Google is holding off on implementing generative AI into its search engine functions.
