Google to announce new photo service

In an effort to help users upload pictures faster to the internet, search company Google is to create a standalone photograph platform.

Google Photos will see the tech firm’s social media images separated from Google+, which has been going through a number of revisions of late. The new platform will be designed to make it easier for users to share their snaps on the news feeds of Twitter and Facebook through Google, as well as facilitating the storage of images online.

The standalone service may also allow the search engine to better compete with the likes of Instagram and Flickr, as well as image-messaging app Snapchat. However, according to the Independent, Google could find it hard to find its niche amongst these social platforms, as there may not be many areas where it can offer a unique perspective to users.

It was noted, however, that the multinational may be able to offer a vast amount of storage space to people looking to share photos online, as well as superior editing tools than the likes of Flickr may be able to provide. It was believed that this may be enough to entice users from the other applications to Google, but the search company has had a mixed success rate in the past when it comes to social platforms.

It is expected that Google Photos will be unveiled at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference, which is due to take place in San Francisco, starting on 28th May.
