Google tests using AI to replace ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ search feature

Search giant Google has begun testing a new version of its home page that replaces the ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ button that has existed beneath its search bar for many years.

It is considering replacing the long-standing feature with a button for the much newer feature of AI Mode, the experimental-stage artificial intelligence (AI) tool that is designed to allow users to ask complex questions and receive thoroughly explained answers.

A spokesperson for Google confirmed that it was testing the new feature in place of ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ through Google Labs to a number of users, although the company has not stated if or when the feature will be rolled out publicly.

A staple feature of Google’s home page, ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ was designed to allow users to access the top-ranked search result for their query, without having to scroll through or even consider any other results. Although the feature is recognisable for long-time Google users, it has been considered by many to be little more than an Easter egg of Google’s search page for many years.

At its upcoming Google I/O conference event, Google is expected to announce a number of major updates to some of its offerings in the realm of AI-powered search. A permanent move to an AI feature like this may signal the company’s increasing commitment to AI in its core offerings, as competition in the search market stiffens from competitors such as OpenAI.
