Google responds to new market rules from CMA

Google has shared its view on new digital market rules being considered by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The company says it supports fair competition and user choice, but also wants to make sure that any changes do not harm the experience of people using Google Search.

The CMA is looking at how large tech companies operate in the UK. That’s especially true for those that run major online platforms. In its review, the CMA asked for feedback on possible new requirements for Google Search. In response, Google says it wants to work closely with the regulator to make sure the rules help users, publishers and businesses.

Google argues its search results are designed to show the most trustworthy information. It says its own services do not get special treatment in search rankings. Google points to past CMA reviews as evidence for this. It also warns that some proposals from outside groups could open the system to abuse.

Another topic raised is the way people choose their default apps and services. Google says Android already makes this easy – especially in the UK, where users see choice screens when setting up new phones. However, the company believes that adding more pop-up screens every year would annoy users. Instead, Google is suggesting a single setting on Android devices where people can change their default search engine at any time without interruptions.

Google also says it wants to give website owners more control over how their content appears in search results, especially as AI (artificial intelligence) tools continue to develop. Features like AI Overviews, which provide summaries with links to websites, are being updated so sites can choose how their material is used. Google says it is working on new controls so publishers can opt out of generative AI features in Search if they want to.

The company says it will keep working with the CMA to develop solutions that are practical and helpful for everyone. Google argues that well-designed rules can support fair competition without harming what people like about using Google Search.
