Google has officially rebranded its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot tool, formerly known as Bard, to Gemini, with new and improved features to go alongside the rebrand.
While Bard was initially launched as a direct alternative to the ChatGPT tool created by OpenAI and funded and used by Microsoft, it struggled from an error-filled launch* and a lack of advantages when compared to other similar chatbots.
Now called Gemini, Google is calling the newly renovated chatbot its “largest and most capable state-of-the-art AI model”. Unlike Bard, Gemini is designed to be able to be able to follow specific and nuanced instructions, perform with increased logical reasoning and even collaborate on creative tasks. It can even aid with highly complex tasks such as coding, according to Google.
Exactly why the tool has been rebranded has not been revealed. However, unlike Bard, Gemini has been released as a mobile app in the United States, with more nations and languages soon on the way. Furthermore, the chatbot has been released with a premium version, named Gemini Advanced, available through a Google One AI Premium subscription, priced in the US at $20 a month.
This puts Google again in direct competition with ChatGPT, which has been leading the AI race recently with its latest GPT-4 update, with Gemini boasting similar capabilities.
Google’s core search service has yet to be majorly impacted by any of its AI developments, but the company’s latest foray may be seen as a step closer towards a search engine powered by same AI models used in tools such as Gemini.
