Google reacts to Trump tirade

A major figure at search company Google has spoken out against the anti-Muslim rhetoric of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, took a swipe at billionaire Trump in the wake of his comments about banning Muslims from entering America.

In a blog post, Pichai doesn’t name Trump, but targets the sentiment that the property mogul has stirred. Pichai said:

“America, after all, is a country of immigrants. That is why it’s so disheartening to see the intolerant discourse playing out in the news these days – statements that our country would be a better place without the voices, ideas and the contributions of certain groups of people, based solely on where they come from or their religion.”

Pichai is not the only high profile figure in the tech industry to condemn Trump, who is also famous for appearing on the US version of reality show The Apprentice. In a statement made last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that he wanted to add his “support of Muslims in our community and around the world”. He also signalled his intentions to make Facebook a “peaceful and safe environment” for its users who live by the faith.

Google CEO and chairman of Alphabet Eric Schmidt also joined the choir of protest, saying:

“We need strong leaders worldwide who will fight broadly for human progress and tolerance, and focus on bettering everyone’s lives.”

The comments come as Trump’s political fortunes seem to be on the up. Political website The Hill reported on December 14th that his support amongst Republicans has surpassed 40%, allowing him to enjoy the largest lead he has had in the presidential race so far.
