Google Maps adds Fake Review Notice to its Google Business Profile Listings

In a recent update to their Business Profile Restrictions for Policy Violations documentation, Google have added that they will add a notice warning to Google Business Profile listings thought to have fake or fraudulent reviews.

“Businesses that violate our Fake Engagement policy may be subject to certain restrictions if we determine violative activity on their profile(s).”

The document continues, outlining the possible penalties that Business Profiles may face if they’re found to violate their terms.

These potential restrictions include the following:

  • Google Business Profile listings won’t be eligible to receive any new reviews or rating and may have their existing reviews unpublished for a set period of time.
  • Google may apply a warning notice to the users Google Business Profile listing to advise consumers that the fake or fraudulent reviews have been removed.

In a screenshot posted on X, Mike Blumenthal shared an image of the warning on a business listing for a cleaning company in London.

Featured alongside a red triangular warning icon, the notice reads:

“Suspected fake reviews were recently removed from this place.”

It’s crucial for business owners to ensure that their Google Business Profile listing is properly optimised to appear in search results for queries relevant to their services.

This optimisation can include adding the physical address of your business to help increase your visibility in local searches, and selecting the most relevant category that represents the services your business offers.

If turned off by your competitors displaying these warning notices, consumers may then opt to choose your services. In the wake of this update, a properly optimised Google Business Profile featuring legitimate reviews may lead to increased conversions levels.
