An application that offered Google users live streaming video assistance is to be brought to a close in April.
Google Helpouts, which connected anyone in need of help with the search firm’s services to online experts, was reportedly not growing as quickly as the company wanted.
According to a statement from Google, while the community that had built up around the feature included a number of “engaged and loyal contributors”, the low pace of uptake had led it to the “tough decision” to close down the product.
Anyone who still wants to make use of the Google experts will have until 19th April to set up live streaming sessions. However, after this date, people – especially professional users – may instead have to seek out external internet marketing specialists for assistance.
After 20th April, those who have made use of Google Helpouts will be able to download their streaming history via another one of the company’s services, Google Takeout. While this will help to make sure that a lot of the information gained through the feature’s use will not be lost, this option will only be available until 1st November.
Google Helpouts offered its users assistance in a wide range of subjects, from art and cooking to legal guidance. It has been available from 4th November, 2013, with people being connected to experts for free, although there was the expectation of payment for any future sessions. However, some users reported being asked for money upfront.
