At this year’s Super Bowl, famous for being the single biggest event for commercials in America in any given year, Google decided to boast about its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) tool. However, the company was forced to remake its ad just days before the big game itself.
The ad for Gemini was designed to showcase how its helpful features can help small businesses transform how they work and become more efficient than ever. The ad in question features the owner of a cheese making business in Wisconsin.
When trying to promote his products, the business owner asks Gemini for help with describing Gouda cheese, and so the AI provides a list of facts about the product. In the copy provided in the ad, Gemini claims that Gouda makes up for around 50% to 60% of the world’s consumption of cheese.
However, some cheese savants have emerged to claim this is wildly false.
In fact, mozzarella is widely understood to be the by far the most popular cheese in the US. While Gouda is thought to be one of the most popular single varieties worldwide, experts are highly doubting the legitimacy of Gemini’s claim.
While Google initially defended the figure stated in the ad, the commercial was edited to remove the claim about Gouda before the Super Bowl halftime show. The ad, as well as the real website from which Gemini sourced the information from, now simply states that Gouda is one of the world’s most popular cheeses.
While this isn’t quite Google’s biggest AI inaccuracy fiasco ever, the company does seem to be making a habit out of promoting Gemini’s inaccuracies to the world.
