Google confirms data from AI Mode will appear in Search Console

In response to a post on LinkedIn, Google Search Advocate, John Mueller, confirmed that performance data from its new AI Mode will be featured in Google Search Console.

This means that Search Console users will be able to see how often the pages on their website are viewed and clicked on when appearing in AI (artificial intelligence)-powered search results.

Although it was previously believed that this data wouldn’t be available in Google Search Console, as reported in our blog ‘Is Google’s AI Mode hiding my website traffic’, Mueller clarified that it will be added as part of the AI Mode rollout.

In his comment on LinkedIn, John Mueller said:

“Al Mode reporting is not yet live in Search Console. We’re updating our documentation to reflect this will be showing soon as part of the Al Mode rollout.”

Google started rolling out AI Mode to searchers in the U.S. last week, offering users AI-generated answers in response to their search queries instead of the usual list of website links.

It is still unclear when website owners can expect to see data from AI Mode in performance reports in Google Search Console; however, Google has updated its official documentation in Google Search Central to confirm that it is coming. It stated:

“Just like the rest of the search results page, sites appearing in AI features (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode) are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console. (Note: AI Mode reporting isn’t live in Search Console yet, but we expect this soon as part of the AI Mode rollout.)”

There is one catch, however. Any clicks or impressions that a website receives through AI-driven features like Google’s AI Overview or AI Mode will be counted alongside traditional organic search traffic in Google Search Console. Traffic driven by AI-enhanced results will not be reported separately.

This makes it harder for website owners and SEO (search engine optimisation) professionals to understand the impact that AI may be having on their site’s visibility in search results. Without clear data separating AI-driven traffic from traditional search, it may be two traffic sources.
