Facebook releases simplified terms and conditions

Major social networking site Facebook has launched a new section for its website to help clearly explain how users’ data is handled.

In a move to tighten up its privacy settings, the Californian company has released the simplified terms and conditions, which are designed to make them more accessible to the average member of the public. Beforehand, the social platform had received some criticism for its legalese T’s and C’s.

The new section, Privacy Basics, will reportedly detail what the firm uses members’ private information for. With many users often posting details to news feeds that could be collected by the service for data, Facebook hopes that if they are enlightened about what is recorded, members can be happier with the platform.

Privacy Basics seems to be broken down into three main areas: what others see about you, how others interact with you, and what you see.

The first explains how people can take control of what is shared about them online, including who can see what. The second covers how people can affect individual members’ content, such as what they can post to friends’ walls and who can comment on statuses. The third is designed to show how a user can customise what they see in their own news feed, including content from advertisers.

While many people may still be confused when it comes to what is recorded about them on social media sites, the Facebook initiative has been seen by some as a step in the right direction.
