Can videos help with search engine optimisation?

Implementing video into your search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign is often overlooked; however, it can be one of the most effective strategies to have in place.

It is rumoured among online marketers that Google prioritises search results that include videos over results without this rich media.

As YouTube is owned by Google, it’s no surprise that they would cross-promote their platforms.

A study by Search Engine Watch revealed that webpages that feature videos are 53 times more likely to rank on page one of Google’s search engine results page (SERP).

Not only that, but a webpage that features videos tends to double a user’s time on the page. This increase in user engagement acts as an indicator to Google that the page is worth ranking and can influence the position of search results.

Creating high-quality videos that are informative and engaging to the visitors to your site is crucial. It’s important to create video content that is helpful to the user, and not just content that will rank.

Depending on your business, this could be a showcase of the services you offer, FAQS, testimonials or a how-to that supports your written content.

If you offer carpet cleaning services, for example, a video showing the cleaning process or before and after results would be ideal.

To help with search engine optimisation, videos that are embedded on your website should target the same keyword/s as the page they’re added to.

Video optimisation includes targeting a particular keyword/s in the title, description and tags. This will help the video appear in Google’s search results for this term/s.

Targeting the same keywords creates a close alignment in your content and informs Google that you have a video and a page on your website dedicated to this topic.

By embedding an optimised video into an optimised page on your website, both targeting the same keyword/s, the optimisation works together to produce even stronger results.

It is important to note that you can’t embed the same video across multiple pages of your site. In doing so, the video won’t be properly optimised for the target keyword of each page, and therefore won’t have any SEO benefit.

It is possible to include videos from other creators on your website; however, be mindful of avoiding content created by your direct competitors. You don’t want to sway visitors away from your site.

Find a video that is already optimised for the keywords that you’re targeting. You can do this by doing a simple Google search for your target terms and choosing from the videos that rank.

Once you’ve selected the perfect video that aligns with the content on your website, embed this into your chosen webpage. You’ll still get some SEO benefits from this, as the video featured can help increase the time spent on page.
