All-conquering consumer electronics giant Apple appears to have dropped the ball, with thousands of people up in arms about its new software.
Back in June 2012, the American company said it would no longer be using Google Maps. Instead, it was announced it would develop its own system, based on data collected by SatNav firm TomTom.
However, its release seems to have been hit with problems, provoking anger from users.
Reported problems with the software include the quality of the images, images being obscured by cloud cover, incorrectly placed locations and even completely missing locations.
There were also reports that a search for Manchester United directed users to Sale United FC, whilst one user reported that a furniture museum was shown as being located in a river.
Apple has so far not commented on the problems. For their part, TomTom has denied it is responsible. A spokesman for the Dutch firm said:
“The user experience is determined by adding additional features to the map application such as visual imagery,
“User experience fully depends on the choices these manufacturers make.”
It is a huge gaffe for Apple, with anyone working in SEO and online marketing in general knowing just what importance UX has. It is why members from both teams so closely work together.
How the reported issues will be resolved is not presently clear. However, with the software being packaged with the latest iOS6, and iPhone 5 users forced to use the new software, a fix will likely be a priority.
