Software issues at an Amazon data centre managed to knock out a number of major online services over the weekend.
Users of Netflix and Instagram, among other services, experienced access problems for several hours on Sunday.
All of the services that experienced issues rely on Amazon’s cloud-based servers. Cloud software company Heroku was another firm affected by the glitch, which was traced back to a data centre based in the US state of Virginia.
Instagram was the first to acknowledge the access issues on Twitter, with other services soon putting out their own warning messages.
For American users, the problems didn’t begin until around 21:00 GMT, and continued for several hours. During the period, users reported that either they couldn’t reach their login pages or that sites were taking a long time to load up.
Amazon put out a message on its web services status page that confirmed the company was looking into issues at the data centre in Virginia. Once the issues were resolved, the company said that a network device experiencing a ‘partial failure’ had triggered the glitch.
Although sort lived, the problem will have caused issues for businesses using the various downed services to complement their SEO strategies with engaging content. The glitch comes just days after the company’s North American stores went down for around half an hour.
Amazon isn’t the only web giant to experience issues recently. While only lasting for around five minutes, a global blackout across a number of Google’s services lead to widespread issues and reportedly cost the company around £330,000.
