Although Facebook has held the social crown in recent times, a flurry of new reports has stated that it may not remain at the top spot for long.
According to data from GlobalWebIndex, the microblogging site Tumblr is now the fastest growing social media platform. Over the last six months, it was found that Tumblr’s total number of registered users increased by 45%, while the number of people actively using the site rose by 120%.
Other platforms that make widespread use of images being posted to news feeds by users were found to be growing quickly too, with Pinterest seeing a rise of 111% in active users and Instagram an increase of 64%. This put them in second and third place respectively in GlobalWebIndex’s growth list.
Meanwhile, the researchers discovered that the more mature platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, were growing much more slowly over the same period. While Twitter saw an increase of 26% in the number of active users, Facebook only reported growth of 2%.
However, these figures may simply be down to the services already being well established, and the top three would have quite a way to go to reach Facebook’s 1.35 billion users. On the other hand, the researchers also conducted a poll of 170,000 of the social platform’s users across 32 nations, finding that many reported being less interested in the company’s services.
Many of the active users were also found to be visiting the site less often, including half of British patrons. In fact, 64% of US and UK teenagers stated that they were cutting back, with boredom a key factor.
