A new survey has revealed that last year saw more than a billion smartphones shipped, with South Korean developer Samsung gaining further ground as the world’s number one mobile maker.
The study, carried out by market research firm IDC, found that approximately 1.004 billion smartphones were shipped in 2013, representing an increase of 38.4% against 2012’s figures.
Data revealed that Samsung accounted for the majority of the units, with Apple coming in second place and Huawei, a Chinese manufacturer, in third.
According to IDC, this is the first time ever that more than one billion smartphones were shipped within a space of 12 months.
Discussing the findings, IDC’s Ryan Reith said:
“Among the top trends driving smartphone growth are large screen devices and low cost.
“Of the two, I have to say that low cost is the key difference-maker.
“Cheap devices are not the attractive segment that normally grabs headlines, but IDC data shows this is the portion of the market that is driving volume.”
As the use of mobile devices grows worldwide, it becomes increasingly important for companies to ensure their websites work efficiently across a range of platforms. Adopting a responsive approach to webdesign means the user experience remains smooth – regardless of the device being used.
Speaking further about the survey data, Reith said that markets such as India and China are moving to a point at which smartphones priced under $150 (£90) represent the lion’s share of the units shipped.
The survey also found that while Samsung’s market share grew by 42.9%, Apple saw its share decline by just under 13%.
