Meta have recently announced their plans to charge EU users a monthly fee of $14 in order to use an add-free version of their mobile app, as well as a $17 fee for the desktop versions. Although there is not yet a confirmed date, these subscriptions are set to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta has until the end of November to adhere to a Luxembourg court ruling, from earlier this year, which stated that “Facebook cannot justify” using personal data to target users with ads without their consent.
These plans, which have been discussed regulators in Belgium and Ireland, will offer an add-free version of the two apps to those willing to pay the monthly fee. Alternatively, there will still be a free version for those who consent to be targeted by ads on the platforms.
This also comes following many huge restrictions that social media companies have had to comply with, one of which impacted Meta themselves after they were fined around €1.2 billion for violating privacy laws. They’re not the only ones however, with TikTok being fined €345 million just last month for their handling of children and teenager’s personal data.
Meta stated that they:
“Believe in the value of free services which are supported by personalised ads. However, we continue to explore options to ensure we comply with evolving regulatory requirements. We have nothing further to share at this time.”
