Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has released plans for a pair of new generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools designed for photo and video editing.
The company’s project ‘Emu’ is the focus of Meta’s AI research and investment. The new tools, Emu Video and Emu Edit, will allow users to instantly generate assets in videos and create image edits that would previously require the use of external editing software. Meta is aiming to give media and creative teams the chance to carry out all editing on either Facebook or Instagram, reducing the need for external tools.
Emu Video will be able to produce clear video content purely through text or still image inputs. Emu Edit, on the other hand, offers still image editing with enhanced flexibility. Users can offer simple or detailed instructions on how they’d like an image to be altered. This may refer to colour changes, background removals or additions, as well as adding, removing or altering objects, all without changing the number of pixels in the image.
Meta has suggested that the new technology is not aiming to replace professional artists and animators, but instead giving them another platform to express themselves. Emu Edit and Emu Video will also give those without the editing skills of professional artists the chance to craft online imagery in ways that previously have been inaccessible. Businesses may find these tools useful for crafting imagery and videos that could catch the eye of audiences online and on social media.
