LG follows Samsung with curved smartphone launch

South Korean tech firm LG has unveiled its latest offering on the ever-changing smartphone market – a curved handset that could edge the developer closer to its biggest rival, Samsung.

At an event earlier this week, the company showcased a new phone with a six-inch curved display – a feature that LG claims will present users with a more immersive experience when they watch videos.

Curved and flexible screens are new to the market, and are believed to provide a more comfortable grip than their conventional counterparts. However, since the differences are otherwise relatively minimal, analysts have generally agreed that curved options are unlikely to become the mainstream choice just yet.

Earlier in October, Samsung became the first company to release a curved smartphone; the screen of a new model called the Galaxy Round – a variant of the firm’s popular Galaxy Note handset – had a slight horizontal concave.

It is not yet known whether any of the other leading hardware developers will follow suit and launch curved devices of their own. While various media reports have suggested that Apple is working on a curve-screen smartwatch, the firm is yet to confirm or deny the rumours.

At present, the new models from LG and Samsung are only available in South Korea, as the companies gauge the consumer reaction and respond accordingly.

While screen curvature is unlikely to affect the way in which we shop online, scroll through social media news feeds or browse the web, the implication it has for video consumption could see some marketers leaning towards a more visual route of engagement.
