A social photo-sharing platform has overtaken Twitter in user numbers after just four years of operation.
The site, Instagram, recently announced that it now has over 300 million users, as opposed to the microblogging platform’s 280 million, despite Twitter having been established since 2006.
Ever since being bought by Facebook in 2012, Instagram has seen steady growth, with many new users signing up to the service. In fact, a recent US report has found that it is now the third most used app in America, behind YouTube and Facebook.
The platform allows its members to share photos and videos on their news feeds, which can also be posted on other social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, as well as more photo-centric sites, such as Flickr.
According to Instagram, over 70 million videos and images are posted on its site every day. The photos, which are cropped into a square shape in the manner of old Polaroid snaps, and can be altered with the use of filters, have proven popular, especially for niche subjects.
The social firm’s CEO, Kevin Systrom, commented:
“We’re thrilled to watch this community thrive and witness the amazing connections people make over shared passions and journeys.”
Instagram’s boss also announced that a number of changes to the platform may be brought in, including verification badges for companies and celebrities, so that users can be sure of following the right account.
Of late, the social site has been trying to clamp down on bogus accounts, especially those that are putting out spam content, with a number having been permanently deleted.
