Google has revealed its Year in Search for 2025, showing what people around the world were most curious about this year. The results highlight a mix of sports, technology, entertainment and major news events.
The list is not designed to show the most searched terms and queries overall, but the searches and topics that received the biggest jump in traffic throughout the year. At the very top of the list was Google’s own Gemini AI, which became the most searched term worldwide, according to Google. Many people were looking for tips and information about how to use it, especially since Gemini features are now built into many Google apps.
Sports were another big focus. India’s cricket matches against England and Australia drew huge attention, as did the new Club World Cup rugby tournament. In news, the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk was one of the most searched events, alongside stories about Iran, the U.S. government shutdown, the election of Pope Leo XIV and the devastating fires in Los Angeles.
Entertainment searches were dominated by the movie Anora, starring Mikey Madison, which beat out big titles like Superman and the Minecraft Movie. In music, Bad Bunny’s song DtMF had the most searched lyrics, while Taylor Swift claimed several spots with tracks from her album Life of a Showgirl. When it comes to streaming platforms, the series Monster: The Ed Gein Story was the most searched show.
Sports fans also looked up boxer Terence Crawford and golfer Rory McIlroy, while football teams Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica were among the most popular searches. In gaming, Arc Raiders topped the list, followed by Battlefield 6 and the puzzle Strands. Food trends included “hot honey” and “Marry Me Chicken”, with “lasagna soup” catching people’s curiosity.
Google also noted that the way people search is changing. More users are typing questions like “What’s the deal with…” or “How do I…” instead of just using keywords. This shift shows how AI SEO optimisation (otherwise called generative engine optimisation, alongside a whole host of other acronyms) is influencing the way people interact with search engines.
