For anyone who thought that Facebook was just a frivolous pastime and something that held no real sway or power, ask Harry Potter star Rupert Grint what he thinks about the social networking website. Rupert, better known as ginger Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, has just secured a UK release date for his new film ‘Cherrybomb’ after his fans campaigned for it on Facebook.
The movie, which shows a gritty real life portrayal of teenagers in Belfast, was debuted in front of a lukewarm reception at the Berlin Film Festival. Following the film’s screening, no distributer was willing to release the film in the UK, but the actions of Grint’s fans on Facebook have changed all of that. A Facebook group was set up and 10,000 fans joined asking for the film to be released in 2010.
Rupert said of the Facebook campaign:
I’m delighted by the huge support the film has already received and am so grateful to my fans, who have travelled the world to support the film at festivals and preview screenings.
The film will be a far departure from Harry Potter as Grint plays a teenager going through sexual awakening, and it contains scenes of nudity and drugs.
