Everton’s Landon Donovan praises Facebook campaign

Landon Donovan has hailed a Facebook campaign that has been started by fans in order to keep the player on Merseyside. Internet marketing takes many forms, and Facebook is one of those forms due to its ability to reach a huge number of people.

Landon Donovan is the captain of the United States team, and a teammate of David Beckham at LA Galaxy. As the US season has finished Donovan has signed a short term loan deal with Everton in order to keep himself fresh for the World Cup, this summer.

However, Donovan has made such an impact at Goodison Park since arriving last month that fans have started a Facebook campaign in order to help keep him around in Liverpool. Internet marketing such as this is very common of late as Facebook has already been responsible for the Christmas Number One and has been used for many other viral campaigns, such as the ‘anti’ marketing tactics employed by a dating website.

Donovan’s Facebook campaign has already secured the support of over 7,000 Everton fans, all of whom would like to see the US international extend his spell on Merseyside. However, it does seem as though their efforts will have been in vain as Donovan is expected to return to LA Galaxy in March.

If he does leave it will be a blow to Everton, who have been in inspired form since his arrival on Merseyside, with wins against Manchester United and Chelsea.

Everton manager David Moyes believes that, even if Donovan does return the US, he will at some point in his career come back to Merseyside.

When Donovan found about the Facebook campaign, he was genuinely thankful for the support he has received:

I was not aware of that…it’s pretty funny. Since the day I got here, the fans have been fantastic.

I was really overwhelmed by how many people were aware that I was coming and knew who I was and said ‘welcome to Everton’. That’s been the same with the team, the manager’s been great – everybody’s been fantastic.

I think not only as a person but as a footballer as well, when you feel that it makes it a lot easier to perform on the field. I’m enjoying every day that I’m here. Every day that goes by makes me think that I want to stay here, but we’ll see what happens.

I would definitely imagine that I will be back here at some point in my life. I think it’s been an incredible experience and away from football, the people have been extremely nice. That being said, I do miss LA, I miss my team-mates there, I miss the sunshine. That’d be nice to get back there too.

  • Galaxy supporters and season ticket holders like myself want our captain Donovan back in the sunshine of Los Angeles and on our team. Go Galaxy!
