Instagram welcomes 400-millionth user

Posted on September 25, 2015

Popular photo-sharing network Instagram has recently announced that it has reached the 400 million user mark after seeing a rapid increase in popularity over the last few months.

The company revealed its latest figures in a blog post stating that it was “thrilled” that its community had grown to such a figure. Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom, the founders of the site, said that this milestone was a distant dream when they first launched the network.

The San-Francisco-based enterprise has now edged ahead of Twitter, which had a user base of 300 million worldwide. This is thanks to a large increase in registered users for the photo app, which claims to have recruited more than 100 million new users in the last nine months alone.

However, the site is still behind mother company Facebook and messaging service WhatsApp, which have accumulated 1.49 billion and 600 million active users respectively.

Further to this, the company dissected these figures and has found that of these 100 million new users, three quarters of them live in countries outside of the U.S., with more than half being outside of Europe. According to the site, a large number of new recruits have come from Indonesia, Brazil and Japan.

The company was purchased by social media giant Facebook back in 2012 for $1bn (£669 million) and has attracted plenty of famous faces since its inception in 2010. These include the likes of David Beckham, Justin Bieber and Beyoncé, who have all racked up millions of followers on the network.

Instagram has recently enhanced its messaging service as well as introducing a new app, Layout, which allows its users to create a collage of up to three photos to be posted on the main app.
