Instagram record for most liked image beaten

Posted on January 16, 2019

The record for the most-liked post of all time on social media site Instagram has recently been broken, with reality star Kylie Jenner’s previous total being surpassed.

When you think of what could potentially take top spot from a celebrity account with over 124 million followers, you would suspect that it would be another Hollywood A-Lister. However, in this case you would be wrong, as Jenner’s previous best has been smashed by a stock image of an egg.

The image was posted to the site on 4th January this year to the account @world_record_egg and since then, it has gone viral and become an internet sensation. The image is the only one to be posted to the account to date, with those behind the account creating it to specifically beat this record. The caption that goes with the post encourages Instagram users to like the post and to set a world record together, and details the mark it needs to beat.

The image itself is just a plain egg on a white background; certainly nothing too fancy that would make someone turn their head and pay attention. However, it is now a record breaker after becoming the most-liked Instagram post of all time. At the time of writing, the post had accrued over 44 million likes.

You can see the post here:

The previous record was held by American reality TV star Kylie Jenner, who posted a picture of her new born daughter Stormi in February 2018. This image has amassed 18.5 million likes on the photo-sharing platform. However, the stock image of the egg smashed this figure in a matter of days, scrambling likes from all corners of the site. It now has more than double the number of likes of the previous record image.

Anastasia Denisova, who is a researcher of internet memes with the University of Westminster, highlights that this is one of the rare victories for an unpaid social media campaign. Denisova compares it to the campaign that called for a research vessel to be named Boaty McBoatface back in 2016.

Interestingly, the new Instagram like record comes not long after the record for the most retweeted tweet was broken. Yusaku Maezawa, a Japanese millionaire, put out a tweet on January 5 stating that he would share 100 million Japanese yen (which is around £720,000) between 100 people. This was retweeted over 5 million times, beating the previous record of 3.4 million retweets.
