Facebook set to test ‘dislike’ button

Social network Facebook has recently revealed that it is planning to test a ‘dislike’ button on the site, but not in the way you might expect.

A significant proportion of the site’s 1.49bn user base has long been asking the question of whether or not the site would introduce a ‘dislike’ function to complement its iconic ‘like’ button.

In a recent Q&A session, which was held at the company’s Menlo Park Headquarters in California, site founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is close to having the feature ready for an experiment on the site.

However, all is not as it seems. Many people who are not in favour of the ‘dislike’ button have expressed concerns that it would just be a way for users to troll each other, or to turn the site into a polling station for online posts. Zuckerberg announced that this new feature would be a way for users to express their empathy rather than to vent anger or disapproval.

The feature is said to be for times when clicking the ‘like’ button does not seem like the most sensitive thing to do, such as ‘sad’ posts. The idea behind the button would be for users to be able to express that they can relate or show support to their friends without potentially offending them by hitting the ‘like’ button.

Last month, it was revealed that the social platform has more than a billion people using it on a daily basis, which is a massive milestone for the company to reach. The company is also working on a range of other features in a bid to solidify its place as the most popular social networking site on the planet.
