Last week, Yahoo finally appointed a new CEO, following a rather lengthy search for a suitable candidate.
Though there have been a number of recent high level departures from Google, the appointment is still something of a coup for the firm. Mayer was an integral part of transforming her previous employer from a garage start-up to the multi-billion dollar operation it is today.
That she is six months pregnant has also provoked a response across the internet. Despite this chatter, many commentators believe she could be the only person capable of saving the struggling firm. How she will do this is not clear though.
Her first statement to her new employees was full of praise though not much substance. The 38 year-old said:
“I’m incredibly honored to now be a part of the team and work with all of you. Yahoo! is an Internet icon.”
She then went on to urge all employees to carry on doing what they do, saying:
“You are doing important work. Please don’t stop.”
Having praised outgoing interim CEO Ross Levington, she did finish her first correspondence with an eye to the future though.
“Looking forward, we need to continue Yahoo!’s tradition of bold innovation, encourage creativity, and ultimately inspire and delight users and advertisers.”
What areas will see new developments is of course not known. However, the approach to search could be on the agenda. With SEOs not presently tailoring their content for Yahoo search, it could be a warning that they will have to in the near future.
