Despite the endless advice online, most small businesses are still struggling with SEO (search engine optimisation). In 2025, the gap between good and bad optimisation is wider than ever.
One of the biggest issues is mindset. Many business owners still treat SEO as a one-off job, like ticking a box on a checklist. They’ll buy a few backlinks, add keywords to their homepage and assume that’s enough. But Google’s algorithm has moved on. It’s now looking for depth, consistency and genuine expertise.
Over the past 12 months, Google has rolled out major updates that have hit low-effort sites hard. The March and July 2025 core updates, for example, punished shallow content and rewarded websites that put time into building trust. Sites with outdated pages, poor UX (user experience) or vague content have been quietly slipping down the rankings.
Small businesses also tend to misunderstand how content works. It’s not just about publishing blog posts, it’s about answering real questions clearly and building a site that deserves to rank. Too many businesses still stuff pages with keywords or rely on AI (artificial intelligence) tools to churn out articles that add no real value.
Another issue is ignoring local search. Google Business Profiles, reviews and location pages play a massive role in local visibility – but many businesses leave these incomplete or outdated.
How important is it to get SEO right?
The cost of getting SEO wrong is high. Lost traffic means fewer leads, lower sales and a weaker online presence. Your competitors aren’t making the same mistakes – and if they’re investing in proper SEO, they’re taking your market share.
If your site hasn’t been updated in years, or you’re not sure where your traffic is coming from, now is the time to act. The rules have changed. Google isn’t guessing anymore. It’s rewarding quality and punishing shortcuts.
