Most of the noise around AI in search has been dramatic. “SEO is dead” makes a great headline, but it doesn’t reflect the reality of what’s actually happening.
What’s really changing is simpler and a bit more uncomfortable. Google’s AI features aren’t replacing SEO. They’re stripping away the padding that’s been propping up weak content for years.
If you’ve ever published a blog post just to “have something there,” you’ll know the type. It answers a question, technically. It uses the right keywords. It ticks the boxes. But it doesn’t say anything new. That kind of content used to stand a chance. Now, it’s the first thing to get filtered out.
AI-driven search works differently. Instead of pointing users toward ten blue links, it pulls together an answer on the spot. To do that, it leans on content that’s clear, specific, and actually useful. Not just relevant, useful. There’s a difference.
For business owners, this shift matters more than any algorithm update in the past few years. You’re no longer just competing for a click. You’re competing to be part of the answer itself. That raises the bar.
A generic “ultimate guide” won’t cut it if it reads like ten other guides already out there. But a piece built on real experience and something that explains why things work, not just what to do, has a much better shot. AI can summarise information all day long. It struggles to replicate genuine insight.
There’s also a knock-on effect for how people discover brands. Even if someone doesn’t visit your site straight away, showing up in AI-generated responses builds familiarity. You’re seen as a source, not just another result. This in itself will enhance reputation by building trust.
So no, SEO isn’t disappearing. But the version of it that relied on volume over value? That’s fading fast.
The businesses that come out ahead will be the ones that treat content less like a checkbox and more like an asset. Fewer articles, done properly, will go further than dozens that barely scratch the surface.
