What is a customer persona?

A customer persona is a simple profile that represents the type of person most likely to buy from your business.

The persona is based on real information, such as customer behaviour, common questions, buying habits and feedback.

Think of it as creating a clear picture of your ideal customer. Instead of saying, “We sell to business owners,” you might describe “Sarah, a busy small business owner who wants more enquiries but doesn’t have time to manage marketing herself.”

This extra detail helps you understand what your customers need, what problems they face and what might encourage them to choose your business.

A useful customer persona usually includes basic information such as age, location and job role. It should also cover their goals, concerns, preferred ways of finding information and the reasons they may hesitate before making a purchase.

For example, imagine a company sells accounting software. One of its customer personas might be “Finance Manager Frank.”

Frank works for a growing company, wants to reduce the time spent on manual reports and worries about whether new software will work with existing systems. He values upfront pricing, practical demonstrations and evidence that the product has helped similar businesses.

Knowing this allows the company to create more useful content. Instead of publishing a general article about accounting software, it could write a guide explaining how to reduce reporting time or produce a case study showing how another finance team improved efficiency.

Customer personas can also improve advertising, website content, email campaigns and sales conversations. When you understand the person you’re speaking to, you can use language that feels relevant to them, while focusing on the benefits they care about most.

The best customer personas are based on evidence rather than guesswork. Website analytics, customer interviews, sales conversations, reviews and surveys can all reveal useful patterns.

You may find that customers share similar challenges, ask the same questions or follow a similar path before buying.

It’s also important to review your personas regularly. Customer priorities can change, new competitors can enter the market and buying habits can develop over time. Creating strong customer personas can help you make better marketing decisions.
