When someone asks a question, they want an answer. Not a lengthy introduction, a history lesson or three paragraphs explaining why the question is important.
It turns out artificial intelligence (AI) might feel the same way.
New research suggests that websites providing direct answers are more likely to be cited by AI search tools such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews.
What does the research reveal?
An analysis of 193,507 AI-generated answers found that pages cited by AI were more likely to answer the user’s question immediately.
In one comparison, 20% of cited pages provided a direct answer at the beginning, compared with just 5% of pages appearing in Google’s top 10 that AI hadn’t retrieved. That’s a considerable difference, although the research identifies a correlation rather than proving that direct answers cause AI citations.
The message for businesses is this: don’t make people wade through your great-great-grandmother’s life story before finally revealing the recipe for a chocolate cake. Get straight to the sweet stuff.
Give your content the answer treatment
Imagine someone searches for “How long does a new roof last?”
Which opening is more useful?
“Roofing has been an essential part of property construction for centuries, protecting homes from the elements…”
Or:
“A typical tiled roof can last between 40 and 60 years, depending on the materials, installation quality and maintenance.”
The second gets straight to the point, providing useful information immediately while leaving room to explore the subject in greater detail. It’s about making your content easier for both people and AI to understand.
Does this mean shorter content is better?
Not necessarily. Getting straight to the answer doesn’t mean sacrificing depth or expertise.
The research also identified associations between AI citations and content featuring tables, recent updates, pricing information and first-hand experience.
The trick is to answer first, elaborate second.
Start with the information your audience needs, then demonstrate your expertise through relevant examples, supporting evidence and helpful advice. After all, nobody wants to dig through a mountain of content to find a nugget of information.
