Google has introduced Indoor Maps to various locations world wide – just in time to help shoppers plan their Christmas shopping trips. Google Indoor Maps will display the interior layout of a building, including shopping malls, airports and small retail stores. The feature was previously available to those who used smartphones which were Android based, it is now being made available to PC Web browsers.
Thanks to the addition of the Web interface, iPhone user and people with alternative devices will also be able to access Google Indoor Maps. According to a Google blog post:
“Before heading home for the holidays or out to shop on Black Friday, check out indoor maps of the airport or shopping mall on your desktop to better plan your trip.
“Simply zoom in on a building on Google Maps and you’ll automatically see a detailed floor plan with helpful labels for gates at the airport, stores within the mall, departments within a retail shop, as well as ATMs, restrooms and more.”
Not all venues and countries are available on the tool as yet, but Google is inviting owners of venues to use the Floor Plan tool to add an interior map of their premises. This could have an impact on the SEO campaign of a number of businesses, from Liverpool to LA. Google features strongly in search engine optimisation and Google Indoor Maps will be a useful addition. Over 20 airports in the US are featured on Google Indoor Maps, along with over 50 shopping centres.
