OpenAI to test visual adverts during ChatGPT image generation

OpenAI has announced plans to test visual adverts during image generation in ChatGPT, giving advertisers another way to promote their products and services.

The trial is due to begin first for US users later this month with a limited number of advertisers, appearing for users on the Free and Go plans.

The format will use imagery to show how products could be used or how services being promoted may benefit users. OpenAI says these adverts will be explicitly labelled and clearly separated from any image being generated within the platform itself, while advertising will have no influence on ChatGPT’s answers.

Currently, ChatGPT ads are only shown to users in text format, along with images of specific products being advertised. New visual ads would likely allow for graphics to be incorporated within ads being shown to relevant users. As of yet, there has been no mention of video ads being introduced to the platform.

Alongside the visual format, OpenAI is expanding its measurement partnerships to help advertisers understand how campaigns contribute to business results. This includes early experiments intended to establish whether advertising produces additional purchases, rather than simply taking credit for sales that would have happened anyway.

For UK businesses, there is no confirmed timetable for wider access to the visual format. Details such as pricing and targeting have also yet to be shared, so it’s too early to assess how suitable these placements might be for an individual campaign.
